An Interview with Chris Date
By Martin English | August 12, 2005
Chris Date has a new book – Database in Depth: Relational Theory for Practitioners,
Here’s an interview on The OReilly Network, where he debunks a lot of wrong information on the “weaknesses of the relational model,” discusses the impact of his classic book, The Third Manifesto, with Hugh Darwen; evaluates the future of SQL as well as his past comments on the language; and closes with his thoughts on the future of DBMSs (Database Management Systems). And if you find you just want more, you can find further discussions related to many of the questions contained in this interview in his book, Database in Depth.
Carl Sagan :
In science it often happens that scientists say, “You know, that’s a really good argument, my position is mistaken,” and then they actually change their minds, and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn’t happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion.
